Garden Activity

Next Saturday, June 14, in Salmon Creek Community Garden, Nick Routeledge from Seed Ambassadors and Food for Lane County will be speaking about Winter Gardening. He is a very knowledgeable well traveled man with much interesting information to share. Bring a chair and a pencil and pad for notes! 10 am in the garden.

In photos we have the new compost pile built by 7th and 8th graders in a SOLV sponsored event organized by the Americorps representative Teara Tyler. In 2 weeks the compost got to 125 degrees F! Soon we will be experimenting with our new compost tea brewer donated by Denise Cater of 72 Oaks Bed & Breakfast here in Oakridge.

Last week Mac and David (in photo) planted scarlet runner beans on the north side of the community corn patch. This week we planted pumpkins and hubbard and acorn squashes.

Thanks everyone for making the garden a fun and thriving place! This next week is supposed to be sans rain so it should be a great week for planting veggies.

Welcome to the Garden!

Thanks for visiting our new SCCG blog. Here we will post announcements, news and pictures of the goings on in our beloved garden.

The Garden is located on the West bank of Salmon Creek, 1/8 mile North of Hwy 58 in Oakridge. To find it using roads: go North on Hills St from 58, bend right on Hills as it turns East at Salmon Creek Park. Turn right into the parking area and head for the creek. Turn right again and walk downstream 1/8 mi until you see a round sign at the entrance!

Currently we are meeting every Saturday morning around 10:00 in the Garden. Be sure to bring water to drink and gloves.

This week we are encouraging private plot caretakers to turn in the cover crop and plant summer crops. The large shared area will be planted with corn and squash. A new path through the center maple grove was build last week and more natives will be planted along the edges.
